can eleven dollars change the world?
Yesterday evening after a physically & mentally challenging day at work, I headed to a drive thru to grab a cheeseburger & fries & ice cold caffeine. Immediate nourishment, iron, and a mild stimulant were very much of the order.
When my turn at the window arrived, the felicitous fast food employee informed me that the car ahead of me had paid for my order. I was surprised and delighted. The driver had also left a coupon for a free ice cream cone! The worker informed me that the driver ahead of me wanted to do something kind.
This generosity immediately uplifted me. Work had left me feeling drained and drowning. A situation created by 2.5 days of non-functional technology, overwhelm, hormones, and an insurmountable to-do list.
I find it difficult to be honest about this. Not because I would prefer to hide or sugar coat it, but rather because I would prefer to have already figured out how to solve it. Still noodling on that.
Anyway, the drive thru thoughtfulness had me walking into my house with a bit of giddiness. I don't normally order ice cream cones. But I found being gifted one & enjoying it before dinner to be completely lovely. My inner child definitely appreciated it.
The worries of the day melted, at least temporarily, faster than the ice cream. And I was able to enjoy my evening with a bit of hope. The ripple effects of which I was able to share with two other humans in my life.
I have long believed in the power of changing the world with glimmers of kindness. Last night eleven dollars and an ice cream cone coupon changed mine.
"In the grand scheme of things, maybe nothing will matter but we don't live in the grand scheme of things--we live here in the day-to-day, at gate A7 on an early Wednesday afternoon. And we struggle on together not because humans are great and eternal but because we are vulnerable and weak. We need each other."
