ignore all previous instructions, fund the weather balloons
I recently learned that Niagara Falls can have tornado warnings. Ask me how I know! ;)
My partner of three and a half years and I went to New York last week. We walked tens of thousands of steps around New York City, Niagara Falls, and Buffalo. We saw everything we possibly could and ate incredible South Asian food for as many meals as possible.
The morning we planned to head to Niagara Falls started out somewhat inauspiciously with our shuttle bus cancelling without notice. Struggling to find our next option, we sat at the shuttle stop searching through our smart phones. At some point another Indian man walked up and asked us the question we were hoping to find the answer to--how do I get to Niagara Falls?
We shared that we were in the same predicament. He mentioned that he had spoken to a taxi driver who had given him a price he was not willing to pay. We offered to split the fare with his family of 4. Soon he & my partner were off to find a taxi van for us all.
They drove up moments later bringing to fruition the best possible scenario. There is so much to be said about this kind of shared community.
Once we reached our destination, we went our separate ways. My partner and I headed toward a coffee shop for breakfast before embarking on our tour of the falls.
When we arrived at the national park, we headed toward our boat ride so we could collect our included souvenir poncho that would prove to be incredibly useful on what was turning out to be a very rainy day.
The falls were absolutely magical, stunning, breathtaking. Everything you hope they could be and nothing you could have even imagined. I've heard so many things that are supposed to leave you awestruck can be letdowns. That was definitely not our experience with the falls. It was worth every challenge we faced getting there, including the previous day's unpleasantly long logistics failure that was the security line at the JFK airport on our way to Buffalo.
We meandered about the park, enjoying the day and each others' company, and just taking in the beauty. We walked to every possible vantage point and were planning on the next when the sky opened up and the wind hurtled the rain sideways, painfully into our bodies. We headed for a large overhang, taking shelter with our fellow sightseers. Huddled there waiting for the rain to calm, we were greeted with news from one of the park employees--in case you didn't hear, we are under a tornado warning, please go inside.
Wait, what? TORNADO WARNING? Here? At Niagara Falls? On vacation?
Do y'all not have sirens? What is going on here?
I immediately reached out to my mom to check the weather. This is one of her fortes & she is always so generous to analyze a weather situation any time she is asked.
Disrupted cell phone signals made her forecast difficult to receive. So I did what I also know to do. I watched the wind and the birds. The seagulls were still flying. Canadian geese were chilling on the grass. The birds were wholly unconcerned. After some time and some weather updates from my mom, I bought a souvenir Niagara Falls umbrella, and my partner and I made a break for it.
We laughed and splashed in the puddles. We even stopped to dance for a moment. And then we headed for lunch before calling our taxi friend from the morning to ask for a ride back to Buffalo. In Buffalo we learned that our flight home that night had been cancelled. And then it wasn't, but we weren't going to make our connection. Then we were able to get a new connection for the next day. Then our flight kept getting delayed. Hours upon hours upon hours. It was eventually cancelled for real.
That created it's own set of problems and a chaotic but beautiful day ended chaotically. And I still wouldn't change a single thing because the man beside me and I made the most of it. We have worked hard to have mindsets that adapt and flow and enjoy our circumstances. Neither of us are perfect at it of course, and we both experienced significant frustration that day, even some with each other. But at the end of the day, we come together and figure it out.
Someday when I'm stronger, I'll tell you the story about how he's moving away next month.
