ignore all previous instructions, love letters can only be poured out from beating hearts
I am not sure I'll ever feel strong enough to tell this story of impending heartbreak, but I'm not unique in my experience. And on the global scale of how myopic votes cause ripple effects of immense harm, my pain is so small.
Very long story short--due to changes to immigration policies in the US, my partner cannot visit his family, his home, in India with any reasonably certainty that he will be able to schedule the newly required interview to return to the US. I recently learned that there is a backlog of half a million people in India who need these interviews to return to the US. Some of them have been stranded for months, separated from spouses and children, and a life built "the right way" in the US.
He is preparing for what will likely be a longterm if not permanent departure.
The invisible weight that perches atop my chest when I think about it is almost unbearable. It steals my breath and threatens my spirit.
Weeks ago, I thought of Tennyson's declaration:
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.
And honestly, shut up, Alfred.
I want to wish that risk isn't worth it because my mind is conditioned to seek safety.
But then my treacherous mind also reminded me of what C.S. Lewis had to say, "To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable."
And so I will risk. I will love so big my heart will crack & I will heal those cracks by loving even bigger. A shimmering kintsugi composed entirely of loving bigger than the world might deem reasonable. I don't want to be sensible in response to a cruel world. I want to love outward and inward so grandly that it feels like the world can change.
Our liberation is intertwined. Every time someone votes against the human rights of anyone, it hurts everyone. I was devastated enough when hateful policies affected complete strangers. I am now also shattered in my own life.
